What Are You Looking For?

Although it’s a catchphrase these days, my mom was the first to tell me, “We find what we’re looking for.” Mom was a “glass is half-full,” “find the silver lining” kind of person. She found the good in everyONE and in everyTHING. Through her example, she made a believer out of me.

One week ago today, I started a 90-day challenge on Facebook to find joy, and I’m encouraging others to get out there and find joy too. Every day, I’m posting a short clip of me finding joy and asking others to share where they are finding joy.

So far, it’s been all peaceful campsites, waterfalls, and great times with friends. Although I often say, “I’m a happy camper,” I’ve ridden my bike around the block enough times to know this journey won’t be 90 days of bliss. My mission is to challenge myself and others to find joy even in the “I’m lost and I have a flat tire” moments.

Those are the times that test my faith and challenge my resolve. Mom taught me that we don’t always get to choose what happens to us, but we do get to choose how we react.

Watching her keep a positive attitude through difficult times molded me into the Joy I am today.

Though I can no longer tell her how much her outlook impacted me, I can pass along what she taught me. As I said in my first video of this finding joy challenge, “I truly believe we find what we’re looking for.”
